Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

The h2-map.eu website is set up and managed by the Clean Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (Clean Hydrogen JU). The Clean Hydrogen JU is an EU body, set up under the form of a unique public private partnership that supports research and development and demonstration (RTD) activities in fuel cell and hydrogen energy technologies in Europe. Its aim is to accelerate the market introduction of these technologies, realising their potential as an instrument in achieving a carbon-clean energy system.

Fuel cells, as an efficient conversion technology, and hydrogen, as a clean energy carrier, have great potential to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, dependence on hydrocarbons and to contribute to economic growth. The objective of the Clean Hydrogen JU is to bring these benefits to Europeans through a concentrated effort from all sectors.

The three members of the Clean Hydrogen JU are the European Union (represented by the European Commission), fuel cell and hydrogen industries represented by Hydrogen Europe and the research community represented by Hydrogen Europe Research.

The static information on site location of each HRS is updated manually by the HRS operators who have individual access to the operators' portal of the E-HRS-AS (GPS coordinates, opening hours, services on site, customer notification on events etc.). The dynamic availability information is an automated signal sent by either the HRS itself via an on-site hardware or via a software interface from the operators' plant monitoring system. The information on Clean Energy Partnership (CEP) approval is provided by the CEP working group.

HRS that send signals directly from the E-HRS-AS hardware provide availability status updates once per minute. HRS connected via the software interface provide availability data whenever there is a status change, or at a minimum, once every 60 minutes. The time stamp of the last status update is shown in the upper right on the pop-up box for each station.

HRS whose availability status is unknown are shown with a blue icon. There are two reasons the availability of an HRS could be unknown:

  • A signal has not been received from the HRS within the expected time-frame. The E-HRS-AS expects status updates every minute or every hour (depending on the signal transmission system). If a signal is not provided within the expected time frame, the availability state turns to "unknown" until a signal is received.
  • HRS that are not yet connected to the E-HRS-AS availability system but are in operation are also shown as "unknown". This includes stations that have recently opened and are not yet connected to the E-HRS-AS as well as HRS which are not able or willing to provide availability update signals to the E-HRS-AS.

If you know of, or operate a publicly accessible HRS not shown on h2-map.eu we will be happy to add the station as soon as possible. You can contact us via email on e-hrs-as@clean-hydrogen.europa.eu.

The map has been optimized to fit both smartphones and tablets. There is currently no stand-alone app version of this map. On Android devices, however, an app version that displays the map in full screen separately from the web browser can be viewed by using the "Add to Home screen" function of your browser. To do so, simply touch the prompt that is presented on the first visit to the map (https://h2-map.eu/) or manually choose the option "Add to Home screen" in the Chrome menu bar at any later time. You may also decide to use a third party app that receives their information from the European database.

The information provided by h2-map.eu is non-commercial and free for use. Our aim is to make this information readily available and used as widely as possible to support the roll-out of hydrogen mobility in Europe. We therefore do not track any visitors of our website. For more information please see our privacy policy.

Hydrogen car drivers

Before driving to an HRS, you should check whether this station offers the correct fuelling option: 350 bar or 700 bar. Most cars are 700 bar and cannot be refuelled at a 350 bar HRS or can only be refueled to less than half their storage capacity. A 350 bar vehicle cannot be refuelled at a 700 bar station.

Please also check the authorization and the payment method before driving to the station as it may require an authorization card or special payment (e.g. pre-registration). In case you have any questions regarding authorization and / or payment, please use the contact information shown on the HRS site of interest.

The pressure level of your car is indicated in the inside of the tank cap.

If your neighbourhood station is not shown on the map, we may not yet know of it. Please send us an email notifying us so we can connect it to our system and provide availability and site information in the future: e-hrs-as@clean-hydrogen.europa.eu.

It should be noted the h2-map.eu map only shows stations that allow public access and some site owners may refuse to participate and provide real-time availability information on the station. You may wish to ask the HRS operator and indicate your interest if you would benefit from this service.

If the availability information of your station is displayed incorrectly, please do the following

  • Reload the map and check the last time stamp (in the upper right site on the site pop-up box of each station),
  • If the station information is up-to-date (time stamp within the last 10 minutes) but shows a wrong signal, please contact us via e-mail on e-hrs-as@clean-hydrogen.europa.eu or call the helpline of the operator published in the pop-up box of the station.

Please contact the helpline of your station, if you have any problems with refuelling your car or are not satisfied with the service of the station. You will find the phone number under "contact information" of the pop-up box of the station.

Some stations display information leaflets or stickers on-site explaining the refuelling process. If you need on-site assistance for refuelling you should contact the HRS operator via the hotline or ask service personnel on site.

There are a variety of different information systems in place, with different definitions for availability, including those that accept less frequent signal updates or use manual instead of automated signals. The main goal of our E-HRS-AS is to harmonize signal definition, the quality of the signal source, signal transmission and update frequencies, and share this information with all interested service providers.

If you encounter a map with different availability information, it can be that the service provider uses a different source of information or decided to only communicate parts of the harmonized information provided by the common European database. For example: You might find that availability information on another map is simply distinguished between "yes" and "no" although the E-HRS-AS platform shares a total of five different states (yes, no, limited, outside opening hours, unknown). Then it is likely that the three missing states are replaced by either "yes" or "no" according to a non-standard method.

HRS owners and operators

Please send an email to e-hrs-as@clean-hydrogen.europa.eu to express your interest in participating in the E-HRS-AS. Everybody is welcome to join.

First, you will need to name a contact person we can approach to organize the integration of your system into the platform. As soon as your HRS has been integrated, we will send you an access to the operators' platform to complete the static HRS site information in the portal and upload a picture of your station.

If you want to participate in the E-HRS-AS platform and have your station integrated, please send an email to e-hrs-as@clean-hydrogen.europa.eu

Every HRS operator or owner receives login credentials to the operator's portal where they are able to change the site information and issue or schedule customer notifications (metadata). A manual change of the station availability information is only possible when:

  • the technical state of the station is "available" but for organizational reasons (events, maintenance activities etc.) the HRS operator decides the system should communicate a "limited availability" or "unavailable" state.
  • maintenance activities are underway at the HRS, but customers may still refuel on request. To override flickering "available /unavailable" states from the maintenance activities, "limited availability" can be selected to reflect that refuelling is still available.

These changes can be done in the customer notification area. Manual changes of availability signals from "not available" to "available" are not possible.

If you would like us to remove your HRS from the platform or temporarily set it to offline (due to suspension of operation), please email us at e-hrs-as@clean-hydrogen.europa.eu
